wishiknewwho as a thank you & to indulge her sunburnt TenII love, which developed around the time I wrote chapter four of A Different Kind of Adventure. Beta-ed by salimali; thank you!Rose let herself into the garden through the back gate. It was a warm day and she expected the Doctor to be in the garden, enjoying the sunshine and working on his plans for the sonic screwdriver he had been trying to recreate since they had arrived here in Pete’s world.
She saw him as soon as she walked up the path, he was on a sun lounger in the middle of the lawn, and he was fast asleep. She walked towards him quietly, not wanting to disturb him. She crouched down beside him. He was lying on his back with an arm across his eyes, the sonic screwdriver plans strewn across his bare chest. His legs were contorted in the bizarre way he always managed to twist in his sleep, exposing the back of them to the sun. His skin had already begun to turn pink and she knew that he would soon regret falling asleep. He was far too pale and freckly to lie in the sun for long without topping up on suntan lotion.
She placed a soft kiss on his shoulder, stirring him from sleep. He blinked up at her, bleary eyed. “Rose.”
“You fell asleep.”
He smiled softly. “It’s comfy here.”
“It’s sunny.” She said, watching his reaction. He didn’t move. “It’s sunny and you’re getting sunburnt.”
He groaned then, and sat up, scattering the screwdriver plans all over the grass. He examined his reddening torso and shook his head. “Ah.”
Rose sat on the toilet as the Doctor lay back in the bath. His sunburn was really showing up now and his eyes were closed. She reached over and played with the tips of his hair gently. “You okay?”
“Not really.” He murmured, tilting his head back to allow her to play with his hair some more. “But you can carry on doing that. It might help.”
She ran her fingers through his hair lightly for a few minutes while he soaked in the bath, wincing any time his skin came in contact with the side of the bath. After a while he opened his eyes again. “Have we got any after sun? Please say we do.”
“We do.” He sighed happily and she bit back a laugh. He looked quite ridiculous and yet there was something absolutely adorable about a delightfully sunburnt Doctor. Not to mention, he was completely at her mercy. She kissed the top of his head and rose to her feet. “Go through to the bedroom, I’ll fetch the lotion, yeah?”
She left the bathroom and headed downstairs to search out the after sun. Finding it in the medicine cabinet she moved back up the stairs and saw him standing in nothing but underpants at the edge of the bed. He looked at her sadly and she decided against telling him he looked pathetic. Instead, she offered a caring smile. “Why aren’t you lying down?”
“The backs of my legs caught the sun. If I lie on my back they hurt.”
“Lie on your front then.” She suggested, her tongue poking out between her teeth as he scowled at her.
“In case you hadn’t noticed, my front is a bit burnt too.” He did not look impressed.
“Lie on the end of the bed with your legs hanging off the edge, I can’t do this with you standing up.”
He did as he was told, making a big show and dance out of the whole thing as he did so. He grimaced as one of his legs came in brief contact with his bedcovers and she rolled her eyes. He had to be overdramatic about everything. “Lie still.” She told him as she began to apply the after sun to his torso. He smiled at her, relief in his eyes.
“That’s nice.” He told her. “Very nice.”
She continued to cover his upper body in the lotion and then ordered him to stand up.
He smirked at her. “You’re a bit forceful today.”
“Don’t go getting any ideas, you’re too sunburnt to move.” She told him as she dropped to the floor and began to cover the back of his legs in the cream too. His skin was boiling to the touch and she wondered if he would be getting any sleep at all tonight. When she had finished applying the last of the after sun she kissed the back of his knee lightly and then rose to her feet.
He looked at her, slightly dazed. “You’re amazing.”
“It’s just after sun.”
“Kiss?” He asked, but she knew it wasn’t really a question.
“If you’re sure it won’t hurt you too much.”
“Kiss me.” He demanded and she obliged, opting to move her hands into his hair to avoid touching any of his sunburnt flesh. As they drew apart he smiled at her. “Maybe I should get sunburnt more often.” He suggested, sweeping her into his arms and pulling her towards the bed. As her body came in contact with his skin he pulled back, wincing. “Or maybe not.”
She sighed. “This is why I left out the suntan lotion.”
“I’ll make it up to you when this is gone.” He told her, indicating his chest.
She smiled, rubbing her nose against his softly. “You better.”
It took the Doctor over an hour to find a position that was comfortable for him to lie in. He was on his side, one arm draped across his body. He had a hand held out across the bed for Rose and she smiled at him as she gripped it. His skin was radiating heat and she couldn’t bear to lie too close to him, which was a shame really because he looked completely adorable and she wanted to gather him up in her arms and sleep with her head on his shoulder. It was something she was always compelled to do whenever he did something particularly sweet or if he’d had a bad day with one of his various inventions or if something happened to remind him how human he was these days.
She squeezed his hand softly and he smiled at her across the bed. “I’ve decided.”
“Mm, what?”
“I’m going to alter the sonic screwdriver plans so there is a setting that’ll alert me when the sun is hot enough for me to burn. What d’you reckon?”
